Where in Kula has Mālama Kula worked?
Seeing as Mālama Kula was formed in the aftermath of the Kula Fire, which occurred on August 8, 2023, the majority of our work thus far has centered around properties that sustained heavy damage and were severely impacted by the fire.
This encompasses the Kulalani neighborhood in Upper Kula, as well as properties mauka of Haleakala Highway, along both sides of Pohakuokala Gulch.
Outside of that immediate area, we’ve also worked on fire fuel reduction and green waste cleanup at multiple properties up Crater Road, as well as the top of Kamehameiki Road.
In addition to what’s pictured in the map above, we’ve also engaged in fire fuel reduction, wood chip scattering, and green waste cleanup at multiple properties in Waiakoa, as well upper Olinda.
Our teams of residents and volunteers have currently worked on 84 properties across the greater Kula landscape, with a goal of serving many more, as we work to help residents with green waste solutions, disaster cleanup, and reduction of fuels to help with mitigating the next preventable disaster.
