Mālama Kula
A community-based nonprofit working on fire hazard mitigation, green waste removal, disaster relief, and land stewardship in Kula, Hawaii.

A community organization, rooted in Kula.
We work with residents, landowners, contractors, and volunteers to reduce fire fuel, manage green waste, mitigate disaster impact, and build a more resilient community.
This isn’t abstract advocacy — it’s boots on the ground, trucks, crews, and real work in our neighborhoods.
Programs
What Mālama Kula does

Fire Prevention & Safety
Reducing wildfire risk through proactive fuel management and early readiness.
overview
Fire Prevention & Safety protects people, homes, and land by reducing the conditions that allow wildfires to spread. Through vegetation management and early detection, the program focuses on prevention first — helping Kula stay safer long before an emergency begins.

Green Waste Management
Helping residents remove green waste to reduce fuel loads and maintain defensible space.
overview
Green Waste Management reduces dangerous fuel buildup while giving residents practical ways to handle organic waste. The program keeps neighborhoods cleaner, safer, and more fire resilient by making green waste removal accessible and reliable.

Community Events & Resources
Strengthening community resilience through connection, support, and shared knowledge.
overview
Community Events & Resources helps to build a more resilient community, while strengthening the social networks that sustain recovery and preparedness. The program connects residents to information, services, and gatherings that build trust and mutual support.

Hazard & Erosion Mitigation
Reducing environmental hazards while advocating for safer infrastructure and land stability.
overview
Hazard & Erosion Mitigation protects the community from landscape instability and preventable infrastructure risks. The program focuses on identifying hazards, stabilizing affected areas, and advocating for action when public safety is at stake.

Water Capture & Storage
Capturing overlooked water to strengthen emergency readiness and agricultural resilience.
overview
Water Capture & Storage develops systems that preserve non-potable water for firefighting, land restoration, and agricultural support. The program explores practical ways to capture stormwater and natural runoff so it can serve the community when it is needed most.
Our why
Why this work matters
Kula is our home — and it is worth protecting.
Our work helps mitigate disaster impact, by clearing fallen trees, managing green waste, working to clear our drainages and gulches, and work directly with Kula residents to protect their land and homes.
